Newbee is best known by the Dota 2 community as the Chinese powerhouse that won The International 2014 and finished runners-up at The International 2017. So it was unusual to see their blue colours represented by a North American team at TI9. But parity has been restored as Newbee have gone back to their roots and as the organization announced their Chinese line-up for the 2019-2020 DPC season. The announcement was made on the Chinese social media website, Weibo.
Two players who were with Newbee last season will be staying with the team – Waixi and Awen. Awen, the post says, will be changing his in game name to ‘Wizard’ as he tries to become the omnipotent Wizard on the Dota 2 field. Three new players will be added to the team from team Typhoon. ‘Fonte’ will be the position 1 carry and 19 year old ‘Aq’ will be the position 2 player for this team. The Weibo post speaks highly of both these players, saying they are outstanding newcomers. Captaining the team will be an old face – Zeng ‘Faith’ Hongda, who is a TI winner having won TI2 with Invictus Gaming. He was a part of the Newbee squad that lost to Team Liquid in the TI7 grand finals. The post says Faith is still hungry to win and will inject a good bit of experience in this young squad.
After the middle of the 2018-2019 season, Newbee’s dominance has dwindled to a point where they aren’t even expected to make the DPC events anymore. The organization must be thirsting to make a return to prominance in the Chinese scene and this new line-up, which is a mix of youth and experience, may just be their ticket to do it.
